Coatsink and Sad Cat Studios’ highly anticipated sci-fi action platformer, REPLACED, debuted last week at The Game Awards. A trailer showcased more of the game’s retro-futuristic dystopia. But more than this, the publisher has offered some new REPLACED story details. We get glimpses of bleak abandoned landscapes, bustling neon cityscapes and stylish combat.

In REPLACED, you play as R.E.A.C.H., an AI trapped in a human body against its own will. This 2.5D sci-fi retro-futuristic action game blends cinematic platforming and free-flow action combat. All wrapped up in what promises to be a deep engaging dystopian story set in an alternative 1980’s.

REPLACED Story Details

In and around Phoenix-City, outlaws are rife in society. Everything is ruled by corruption and greed. Those in power see humans and their organs as nothing more than currency. Players will explore this world, and uncover the mysteries from the perspective of R.E.A.C.H., who is beginning to understand what it’s like to be human in a broken world.

REPLACED is inspired by cyberpunk cinema like Blade Runner 2049 and Upgrade. Developers Sad Cat Studios say they want to build an in-depth, complex world. According to the developer, the pixel art style is ‘at the heart’ of REPLACED‘s gritty, dystopian past.

REPLACED is planned for release in 2023. The game will be available to play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. It will also launch on Xbox Game Pass for console and PC from day one.
