At the beginning of 2023, it came to light that Disney was planning a third instalment of the sci-fi franchise Tron. With Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning at the helm, several new Tron: Ares cast members have now been confirmed. They include Star Wars Jedi: Survivor actor Cameron Monaghan.
Best known for his roles in Shameless and Gotham, details on Monaghan character have not yet been released. He’ll be joined by another new name on the roster, Yellowjackets star Sarah Desjardins. She is also known for her roles in Netflix’s The Night Agent and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Tron: Ares Cast
Monaghan and Desjardins are joining a cast that includes Jared Leto (Morbius, Suicide Squad), Greta Lee (Russian Doll, Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse), Evan Peters (American Horror Story) and Jodie Turner-Smith (Anne Boleyn).
The original 1982 film Tron starred Jeff Bridges as video game creator Kevin Flynn who entered his digital creation. 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy then centred on his son – played by Garrett Hedlund – who then followed in his father’s footsteps. Tron: Ares will continue the narrative, but this time more of the film will be set in the real world.
Leto will play a computer program called Ares determined to cross over into the human world.
Reports suggest production for Tron: Ares is expected to start this August, eyeing up a 2025 release. This might be hampered by the ongoing writer’s strikes currently engulfing the film industry. The movie will be produced by Leto, Emma Ludbrook and Jeffrey Springer and penned by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.
