The return of Fantastic Fest next month will see a huge swathe of premieres arriving, all kicked off with a classic reboot. Troma’s quirky 1984 film The Toxic Avenger will be the opening night film, reimagining the movie for a modern audience.
Produced by Legendary Pictures and directed by Macon Blair, The Toxic Avenger will feature an all-star cast. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) will play this infamous avenger who becomes disfigured after falling into a vat of toxic waste. He’ll be joined by Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige, with Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon.

A feature-filled festival
Back for its 18th edition, Fantastic Fest will show 29 world premieres. Plus 24 North American premieres and 18 US premieres in Austin, Texas.
“The Fantastic Fest team is ready to take you on a journey you won’t ever forget. We’ve taken the best week of the year and supercharged it: more movies, more parties, more fun,” says Festival Director Lisa Dreyer in a statement. “If you want to see the best new movies from around the world first with the best audience, Fantastic Fest is the place to be.”
Joining The Toxic Avenger reboot on the bill are Paramount+’s Pet Sematary: Bloodlines and JT Mollner’s Strange Darling. The line also includes sci-fi epic The Creator from 20th Century Studios and Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher, to name a few.
The main lineup also includes the world premiere of Your Lucky Day, featuring one of Angus Cloud’s final performances. “The Fantastic Fest team was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Angus Cloud. His performance in Your Lucky Day immediately won over our team, and we want to pay tribute to his talents and life at the festival,” said Annick Mahnert director of programming.
Fantastic Fest runs from 21st-28th September 2023.
