The critically acclaimed Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features every previous Super Smash Bros. character, and many more besides. From Pichu to Mario himself, the roster is packed with stars. However, many characters need unlocking, with only eight available to begin with. This guide will teach you how to unlock all characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
There are multiple character unlock methods. Below you’ll find all the details for how to unlock every character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, we highly recommend that you maintain a running list of character unlocks until you’ve obtained them all. This will prevent you from putting effort into a method that would result in unlocking a character you have already obtained.
How to Unlock All Characters in Smash Bros. Ultimate
As stated above, there are various methods to unlock new characters in the game. What’s more, additional characters have been added via DLC. We’ll begin by discussing the fastest way to unlock all characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
The Fastest Way to Unlock Characters in Super Smash Bros. Melee
Throughout the game, unlocking new characters relies upon you meeting them in a match and defeating them. The fastest way to do so is to play a simple versus match (known as a Smash match in the game).
This will assign you a random character, which could well be a new character. There are some options you can set to make this process even faster. Check out these settings:
- Play offline.
- 1 stock.
- Level 1 CPU.
After the match you should receive a ‘challenger approaching’ message. Beat the character to unlock them!
An additional note however, is that there’s a 10 minute timer between these encounters. This is designed to prevent unlocks from happening to quickly. There is a way to navigate past this, as detailed below:
- After unlocking a new character, quit to the Nintendo Switch home.
- Close the game.
- Restart the game.
- The 10 minute timer will be reset!
Eventually you may find this system no longer works. In that instance, simply choose to battle on a large stage (such as the Moray Towers Splatoon stage) and walk up and down before completing the match. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate records player travel distance, and will use this as a secondary measurement for character unlock rates similar to the 10 minute timer.
Other Character Unlock Methods
There are a number of other ways to get characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Details on each follow below.
- Each Classic Mode completion results in a character unlock. The eight starting roster will unlock Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters in a specific order. These new unlocks will in turn offer further new characters. The details of the unlock chain can be seen in the official image below.

- You can also encounter the new characters when playing World of Light. Defeating them will unlock them across all game modes. This is also how you unlock Mii Fighter styles.
- Playing any gameplay mode for 10 minutes of in-game time will see a new encounter when you exit the mode.
What Happens if You Fail the Unlock Fight?
If you should fail to defeat the battle to unlock a new character, don’t worry! You can attempt the fight again. It will randomly appear on the Main Menu, so be sure to select it when you see it.
