Atari has today launched the kaleidoscopic arcade shooter Akka Arrh. Created by Llamasoft, led by legendary programmer Jeff Minter, the creator of Tempest, Space Giraffe and numerous other classics, the game is now available on PlayStation 5 and PSVR 2.

Tinged with Minter’s sense of humor and signature style, Akka Arrh is a showcase of his love of psychedelic colour and light. A frenzied kaleidoscope of neon insanity, Akka Arrh was an abandoned 1982 prototype arcade machine which became available to the public as part of the recently published collection Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. This new version has been modernised, but retains the feel of 80s era gaming.

In Akka Arrh, players control a command center poised to destroy oncoming enemies. Players start with bombs that trigger a chain of reactions on-screen. When enemies are defeated, players accumulate bullets that are used to keep the multiplier up.

As reported by XR Source last month, Akka Arrh’s all-new VR version transcends its 2D constraints. It brings a new dimension of gameplay that promises to be as immersive as it is intuitive. In VR, the experience has been elevated from a visual spectacle to a fully enveloping journey into a hypnotic universe.

Each layer of techno-infused action, previously compressed in the 2D space, now unfurls in a rich 3D landscape. In this surreal VR world of cascading shapes, colors, and sounds, every element of Minter’s vision comes to life. It’s an intensity and clarity that was once unimaginable, transforming the game into a sensory odyssey.

Akka Arrh is now available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. At present, the VR edition is exclusive to PSVR 2.
