Yesterday’s announcement of Mortal Kombat 1 didn’t come as too big a surprise. Series co-creator Ed Boon does like to tease. However, now that the flood gates have opened we can expect a steady trickle of new information. Indeed, with pre-orders for the game going live later today, there’s bound to be new information very soon. For now however, we’ve compiled details on all the characters confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1 thus far.
Mortal Kombat 1 Characters
As a the longtime poster boy of the Mortal Kombat series, it’s no surprise Liu Kang is returning. Similarly for Sub Zero and Scorpion, though their appearance differs greatly in Mortal Kombat 1. Other returning characters such as Kung Lao, Raiden and Kitana are all featured in the debut trailer. Below you can find more details on their new appearences.
Liu Kang
As stated above, Liu Kang was always a sure thing. He is one of the few characters to have made an appearance in every single Mortal Kombat game. He’s the nondescript good guy. A martial arts fighter very clearly on the side of good. In Mortal Kombat 1 his powers have grown considerably. He’s now ascended to godhood. Good for him.
Raiden
The God of Thunder and protector of Earthrealm, Raiden is another character that’s appeared in Mortal Kombat since the very beginning. Way back in 1992. Traditionally, he’s a good guy. However, in Mortal Kombat 11 he was corrupted. The first trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 suggests that this has all been undone, and we’ll see Raiden on the good guy team once again.
Kung Lao
Kung Lao was first introduced in Mortal Kombat II. While presented as a good guy, his appearance and actions didn’t exactly sell it. Later games have made it much more clear cut. Kung Lao is one of Earthrealm’s champions and a friend to Liu Kang.
Kitana
The ‘will they, won’t they’ between Kitana and Liu Kang has frequently offered drama that even Friends would be jealous of. Princess Kitana, to give her her full name, is the adopted daughter of Shao Khan. However, if ever there was a dysfunctional family, it’s this one. Shao Khan actually murdered her parents and stole her as a baby. Nice guy.
Mileena
Mileena is a clone gone wrong. She was supposed to be Kitana fused with the essence of a Tarkatan warrior (see: Baraka). However, Shao Khan decided to keep her and raise her as his daughter. He’s not all bad, eh? She was trained to be a ruthless assassin. Oh.
Mileena is bad through-and-through, and is constantly shown to be jealous of her “sister” Kitana.
Scorpion
Scorpion has regularly been cited as Boon’s favourite character in the series. As such, it’s no surprise to see him returning. His original story saw him dead before the series even began, returning to enact revenge on his killer, Sub Zero. However, he’s looking much more human in that debut trailer. Are you going to see a different side to Scorpion?
Sub Zero
And Sub Zero, too, looks different. And in a similar fashion to Scorpion. We’ve had unmasked Sub Zero characters previously, including his son. This time around however, it looks as if something has changed. In the trailer, we can see what looks like a fight about to breakout between the two ninjas, but their attention is taken but something… are we going to see the pair finally joining forces?
Shang Tsung – Mortal Kombat 1 Pre-Order Bonus
“Even in this new era, one constant remains…” states Liu Kang in the debut Mortal Kombat 1 trailer. At this moment, Shang Tsung – in his more youthful appearance – enters from a portal. And then proceeds to brtually murder everyone.
Shang Tsung is actually the only Mortal Kombat 1 character that we know will definitely be playable in the game, as he’s already been confirmed as a pre-order incentive.
Other Mortal Kombat 1 Characters
There are, of course, many more characters yet to be confirmed. We’ve already heard that there will be cameo characters from other franchises, but no specifics have been confirmed at present. Plus, there’s another 60-odd potential characters for the developers to choose from.
