Games being developed for retro consoles is nothing new. The likes of the Dreamcast, PlayStation and NES all have strong homebrew communities. However, releasing physical cartridges is still quite rare. Mega Cat Studios are aiming to change that. Following the success of Game Boy game Kudzu, a new horror game for the Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive has been revealed.

More than this however, Sacred Line II has already been funded. In a staggering display of support from retro gaming enthusiasts, Mega Cat Studios and Sasha Darko announced that their Kickstarter campaign for the brand new Sega Genesis horror game had been fully funded within the first 24 hours of its launch.

Set as both a sequel and a prequel to the original Sacred Line Genesis, this new game offers a blend of mystery, exploration, and text-based dice combat. Sacred Line II chronicles the journey of Sarah. She’s a young girl with a troubled past. After a near-fatal encounter with a religious cult, she’s mysteriously brought back from the brink of death. Set against the backdrop of an alternate 1999 where Yugoslavia still exists, players will help Sarah navigate her surreal world to prevent its imminent downfall.

Sacred Line II is a unique post-apocalyptic adventure that will transport you into an alternate-reality world ruled by demons that were summoned by an ancient cult,” said developer Sasha Darko. “It’s more than a horror game, it incorporates a complex story that also explores mature themes, such as human trafficking and proxy wars. It’s very different from everything else on the system, and I hope you’ll like it.”

Now that the game’s development is secured, Mega Cat Studios are looking towards stretch goals. The first is being presented as a secret level. A standalone DLC. The mechanics of this are not quite clear – can the DLC still be played via cartridge on the original Genesis/Mega-Drive console? – however the prospect is certainly interesting. Two other stretch goals paint a clearer picture; an alternate ending and a Steam port.

At the time of writing, there’s still 25 days to go for the Sacred Line II Kickstarter campaign. Players can pledge now for a new Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive horror game designed with high-quality 3D graphics optimised for CRT TV. Are you interested in the creation of new titles for retro consoles?
