Announced earlier this year, Off the Grid is shaping up to be something very special indeed. The game is intended to merge multiplayer and single-player experiences, with mass servers allowing some players to go head-to-head to claim zones for themselves, while solo players simultaneously attempt to infiltrate enemy territory and conduct espionage missions. It’s a brilliant premise for an MMO, and the new Off the Grid story trailer adds even more credence to the idea.

From the initial announcement of Off the Grid it was acknowledged that movie director Niel Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) was involved in the project. However, with this new Off the Grid story trailer, we can see just how much he has influenced the project.

Billed as an ‘Off the Grid Cinema short film’, this new video shows all manner of sci-fi shenanigans going on. From cybernetic implants to electronic bullet shields. Bladed assassins and huge explosions. And all of this taking place during daylight, under the very recognisable yellow/gray aesthetic that is seen in many Blomkamp action sequences.

The Off the Grid story trailer was produced by OATS Studio, Blomkamp’s own production house. OATS Studio has released a series of unrelated shorts, that are equal parts brilliant and awful. The trailer was ‘brought to life’ by UPP VFX, according to Gunzilla Games.
