Electronic Arts has announced a number of server closures for many older titles. Amongst that number is the Syndicate reboot, the marmite FPS reboot from 2012. People either loved or hated this new vision for the now 30-year-old franchise, but those looking to finish the co-operative gameplay won’t have long to jump back in.
First on the chopping block is the fantastic Shadows of the Damned. This services was closed a few days ago. Next up is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, there’s also the Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning available for current generation systems. So that’s less of a loss, then.

So there you have it. Any tragic losses for you personally? Did you manage to unlock all your pending Trophies and Achievements already? We can imagine there’ll be a mad dash for many before the servers officially shut down!
Of course, server shut downs are a natural part of modern gaming. With so many titles demanding their use, it’s an expected part of the cycle that older titles will make way for newer releases. However, it would be nice if the industry as a whole recognised this beforehand, and had an embedded strategy to allow for peer networking to replace servers once a game had reached the end of it’s lifespan.
