For many, the era of physical movie media is mostly over. While 4K UHD Blu-ray films are still coming to market, the abundance of streaming services killed off the likes of Blockbuster and the need to continually buy new movies. This was fundamentally led by Netflix, which started out with DVD rentals before evolving into the entertainment juggernaut it is today. After 25 years, Netflix will be closing its rental service, but not before giving customers one final surprise.

Having announced the upcoming closure of DVD.com earlier this year, Netflix has contacted customers to offer them a bunch of discs. As reported by Collider, the company is giving them a chance to receive up to ten more discs. Only available to US customers, all they have to do is opt-in before 29th August.

The death of Netflix DVD Rentals

If you’re a Netflix DVD rental customer you should’ve received an email saying: “After 25 years of movies in the mail, we’re approaching the end of our final season. We really appreciate that you’re sharing movie nights with us until the last day. Let’s have some fun for our finale!”

The promotion is completely random by the sound of it. Netflix selects an unknown amount from your must-watch film queue, regardless of your subscription plan. So you could get a couple more red envelopes through the door, or you could get ten!

Netflix DVD rentals come to a close in just over a month. The final batch of discs will be shipped on 29th September 2023. Streaming has killed off the rental market, with DVD.com subscribers going from 14 million in 2011 to around 2 million by the end of 2019.

“We feel so privileged to have been able to share movie nights with our DVD members for so long, so proud of what our employees achieved and excited to continue pleasing entertainment fans for many more decades to come,” said Netflix in a statement. “To everyone who ever added a DVD to their queue or waited by the mailbox for a red envelope to arrive: thank you.”
