A few months back, we were treated to the first details for The Toxic Avenger reboot. The opening film for Fantastic Fest in September, fans of Troma’s 1984 B-movie superhero flick can now enjoy the first reboot teaser trailer.
Directed by Macon Blair, the film stars Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage in the title role. Joining him in this comedic gore-fest are Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Julia Davis, Jonny Coyne, Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon. So there’s a decent supporting cast, which is no surprise considering the original film’s cult following.
“I just wanted to do something that I’ve never done before,” Dinklage previously told Empire regarding the character. “So why not be a monster in an over-the-top, crazy movie?”
The right level of toxicity
The teaser trailer for The Toxic Avenger emulates an 80s-style news bulletin. A news anchor announces: “A group of armed extremists, the Nasty Lads — they’ve taken hostages at a Miss Meat lunchatorium downtown.” Cue the entrance of The Toxic Avenger who brutally takes down the gang. Considering the original and this first teaser, the upcoming film will be a visceral piece of entertainment. More akin to The Boys rather than Captain America.
Dinklage stars as downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze. After his employer refuses to cover treatment for his terminal illness Gooze decides to rob the company. However, in doing so he falls into toxic waste, becoming The Toxic Avenger.
A Legendary Entertainment project, The Toxic Avenger doesn’t yet have a release date, theatrical or on-demand. Hopefully, it’ll be sooner rather than later, now progress is being made in the current Hollywood strikes.
