When CD Projekt Red released the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020 things did not go well. In fact, that’s a bit of an understatement when it comes to bad game launches. Since then, focused efforts have improved the game, culminating in the recent success of the expansion Phantom Liberty. CD Projekt Red wants to do even more with the futuristic IP, working on a Cyberpunk 2077 live-action project with Anonymous Content.
The project will be set within the Cyberpunk 2077 universe but will feature a brand-new story. It’s still in the very early stages, as the team are currently looking for a screenwriter the studio announced. Considering the WGA has come to an agreement with AMPTP to end their strike, the timing bodes well for the live-action production.
Cyberpunk 2077 in the flesh
Anonymous Content has created TV shows like True Detective and Mr. Robot and Academy Award-winning films including The Revenant and Spotlight. So the Cyberpunk 2077 film should be in good hands. The Cyberpunk 2077 creative team will be working on the film alongside Anonymous Content Studios’ Head of Television Garret Kemble, Director of Development Ryan Schwartz, and Chief Creative Officer David Levine.
Currently, it’s being referred to as a ‘project’. With no indication as to whether this will be a TV show or a big film production. The IP has previously found success with the critically acclaimed Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Winning several awards in the process.
2023 also saw the publication of the novel Cyberpunk 2077: NO_COINCIDENCE, written by best-selling sci-fi author Rafal Kosik. While board game publisher CMON is currently preparing to launch Gangs of Night City after holding a successful Kickstarter in 2022.
