The Hollywood writer’s strike involving the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has come to an end, partially easing Hollywood’s issues. However, the SAG-AFTRA strike – which involves actors – is still ongoing, having a knock-on effect on release schedules. That has meant Paramount and Skydance have now delayed Mission: Impossible 8 for a year.
Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning, Part Two – to give it its full title – had been due for release on 28th June 2024. The film has now been pushed back almost a full year to 23rd May 2025. Primarily, there was a knock-on effect due to the promotion of Dead Reckoning, Part 1 and then the strike. Cruise and the other cast members halted Part Two’s production to promote Part One. Then the strike occurred and everything halted.
Dead Reckoning, Part 1 arrived in July this year to a fairly lukewarm welcome. The film only managed to gross $172.1M in the US and $567.5M worldwide. Compare that with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer which exceeded $900M worldwide and Barbie’s $1.36 billion worldwide. It’s easy to see how Cruise’s Ethan Hunt may have lost some of his magic.

Delays, delays and more delays
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning, Part Two isn’t the only film to suffer a delay. Paramount has moved several more, A Quiet Place: Day One, IF and the untitled animated SpongeBob SquarePants movie.
A Quiet Place: Day One starring Lupita Nyong’o and Denis Hare has been pushed back from 8th March 2024 to 28th June. A spin-off of John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, the film will be set in New York City.
The John Krasinski-directed IF is actually being moved up a week. From 24th May to 17th May 2024. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon, IF: “Follows a young girl who goes through a difficult experience and then begins to see everyone’s imaginary friends who have been left behind as their real-life friends have grown up.”
Finally, SpongeBob SquarePants is moving from 23rd May 2025 to 19th December 2025.
