Thanks to the retro boom over the past few years this has allowed Atari to delve into its extensive catalogue. The latest title to see a modern revival is Balls of Steel, a pinball game that first appeared in the late 1990s. Remade by Big Boat Interactive, the game has rolled onto Steam today.

Balls of Steel originally debuted at E3 in 1997, receiving praise for its new approach to the pinball genre. Now you can relive – or experience for the first time – those 20th century heydays again. Retaining its classic visuals and sound effects has still been given a modern makeover and improvements.

Big Boat Interactive has ensured the five original tables remain whilst adding two more: Centipede and Missile Command.

Great balls of fire!

Supporting keyboard, gamepad, or mouse controls, each table has a multitude of challenges and multipliers to unlock. You can play solo or there’s a shared split screen option for some PvP action.

Balls of Steel tables

  • Darkside: Set on a remote space station under attack by alien creatures.
  • Barbarian: A medieval fantasy quest with a huge dragon on the table.
  • Firestorm: A mad bomber is sowing chaos in a dystopian U.S. city.
  • Mutation: An accident in a secret science lab has unleashed a massive, slimy monster.
  • Devil’s Island: Forget fantasy island; this is a nightmare island with lava, deadly creatures, and voodoo.
  • Centipede: Blast through waves of garden pests in this recreation of the Atari arcade classic.
  • Missile Command: Defend your city from incoming missile attacks and killer satellites.

Balls of Steel is now available on Steam retailing for $8.99 USD/£7.49 GBP. Or for more retro goodness keep an eye out for the upcoming Arcade Paradise VR.
