Well, it looked like it was going to happen and it has. The second instalment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga has been delayed until the new year. After learning that Dune: Part 2 could see a delay in July, Warner Bros. has announced a new 2024 release date.

Warner Bros. and co-producer Legendary Entertainment agreed on the delay due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America (WGA) strikes. As reported by Collider, both companies decided “that a move until next year was the best bet for all involved,” because “the film would not get the promotional campaign it deserves”.

The strikes strike again

If you didn’t already know, the strikes are happening to secure writers, actors and other union members better equity. Whilst executives enjoy lucrative salaries from the torrent of movies Hollywood produces, the people who actually make the content we all love are less well reimbursed.

This has led to a current standoff between all parties, with numerous productions affected. Some, like Deadpool 3 and Tron: Ares have been delayed indefinitely. Others, such as Dune: Part 2 which have finished production are now being rescheduled to ensure a better run at the box office.

Whilst it’s unsurprising that the Dune: Part 2 delay has taken place, it’s still disappointing for fans. They’re now going to have to wait until 15th March 2024 to see Timothée Chalamet return as Paul Atredis. Once again, he’ll be joined by Zendaya as Freman Chani (Spider-Man: No Way Home) and Rebecca Ferguson as Atredis’ mother Lady Jessica (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning).

Continuing the story of Atredis’ fight for Arrakis, the film also stars Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Stellan Skarsgård and Javier Bardem.
