The Halo games timeline is a bit of a muddle. Over the last two decades we have received Halo games on a variety of platforms. Spin-offs, remakes, and much more besides. So, if you’re looking for the correct order in which to play the games – either by release or story chronology – Chit Hot has put together a handy guide to get the most out of your gaming time.
While there’s no denying that the original Halo: Combat Evolved still stands as a testament to fantastic game design to this day, there are few that would argue that the series truly hit it’s prime in the Xbox 360 era. The Halo series offered two of the best Xbox 360 games ever made. One of which made the top 10 best selling Xbox 360 games list, too. Below you’ll find every Halo game in the order that they were released.
Halo Games Release Dates
- Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)
- Halo 2 (2004)
- Halo 3 (2007)
- Halo Wars (2009)
- Halo 3: ODST (2009)
- Halo: Reach (2010)
- Halo 4 (2012)
- Halo Spartan Assault (2013)
- Halo: Spartan Strike (2015)
- Halo 5: Guardians (2015)
- Halo Wars 2 (2017)
- Halo: Fireteam Raven (2018)
- Halo Infinite (2021)
Some great games there, no doubt. However, just as the date a game is released doesn’t necessarily mark it’s quality – ‘newer’ doesn’t always equate to ‘better’ – so is it true of storylines. Modern franchises spawning multiple entries often jump back-and-forth across their timelines. Adding new context and lore to periods previously only given a light touch. Of course, the Halo games timeline does exactly this.
Below you’ll find the complete chronology of the Halo games timeline. Now you can play through the overarching universe storyline in the correct chronological order!

The Future of Halo
So that’s the Halo games timeline up to today. But what comes next? At present, we don’t know. 343 Industries publicly cancelled their intentions to bring more campaign content to Halo Infinite in 2023. However, rumours persist that there’s still more to come, perhaps from a different studio.
What we do know however, is that Halo games aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Whenever we hear what’s coming next, you can be sure that Chit Hot will be ready for it!
