Summer is nearly upon us and many governments across the world are deciding that now is the time to lift their national Covid-19 lockdown policies. Politics aside, many of you will be itching to get outside and enjoy the sun for a while. However, if your lockdown has been anything like mine, this comes with one big caveat.

Like many of you, my time inside has been rather sedentary. I’ve reached the age where I can no longer rely on my metabolism to burn away endless amount of calories and carbs, so my body needs a little extra help to get back into shape after all the Netflix binging of the past couple of months. And so, here’s a selection of workout apps that could help you lose a few pounds prior to that day at the beach you’ve been planning since March.

Six Pack in 30 Days

Six Pack in 30 Days

Leap Fitness Group offer a selection of some of the most highly rated workout apps available of mobile devices. Whether or not you believe the title is irrelevant (I certainly haven’t found myself with washboard abs yet). However, the idea of a constant and manageable exercise routine is not just a good thing for your potential weight loss, but also for you health as a whole.

Just 10-15 minutes a day can make a big difference, and Six Pack in 30 Days offers enough variety to get the blood pumping without pushing too hard.

Available on Google Play and App Store.

7 Minute Workout

7 Minute Workout

Does 15 minutes sound too long? How about 7 minutes, then? Simple Design Ltd. has built an app that delivers on the two promises made in it’s titles – it’s 7 minutes, and it’s simple. As with Six Pack in 30 Days, 7 Minute Workout will get the blood pumping, but it’s not quite enough (in the opinion of this totally not doctor, that is) to be your only investment in exercising. If you already have an active lifestyle however, 7 Minute Workout could be all the top-up you need.

Available on Google Play and App Store.

Daily Workouts - Exercise Fitness Workout Trainer

Daily Workouts – Exercise Fitness Workout Trainer

Daily Workouts – Exercise Fitness Workout Trainer goes one step further than the above apps. Instead of being instructional, this app is designed for people who know a little about what exercise they need and is intended to help users build their own workouts. Like 7 Minute Workout it’s a great accompaniment to any existing exercise regime. Customisable for sets of 5 to 30 minutes, Daily Workout Apps’ highest rated mobile app is a step up from much of the competition.

Available on Google Play and App Store, or via Amazon.

Looking for a Different Type of Workout App…?

Now, this isn’t strictly for use on mobile devices. The Nintendo Switch is a fantastic piece of hardware and is extremely versatile, so it could be considered mobile!

Ring Fit Adventure box art

Ring Fit Adventure is a package that follows in the footsteps of the infamous Wii Fit. Much like the apps above, it’s core philosophy is to get you moving. There’s of course some logic to the way in which it does so, but at the same time it dresses it up in an adventure game with levelling-up, boss fights and all that jazz.

The game/fitness app/whatever is itself also versatile, offering players/users/whoever the option of engaging with the game part or ignoring it altogether and concentrating solely on the exercise. The package includes the game, a rubber ring and a thigh strap to attach the Joycon Controllers and can even monitor your heart rate after a workout to adjust the intensity!
