The recent announcement of White Day 2: The Flower That Tells Lies Complete Edition was welcomed by fans of the series. However, for every fan keen to jump into the new edition of the game, there are just as many who seem confused by the proposition. In this article, we’ll explain exactly what’s happening in the White Day series.

White Day: A Labyrinth Named School (2001)

The original White Day game, A Labyrinth Named School, was released for PC back in 2001. It’s a Korean survival horror game developed and published by Sonnori. In some territories, the game was simply known as White Day.

A school that was originally built as a hospital during the Korean War plays host to some supernatural occurrences. Many visitors and builders died during the building’s construction, which awakened a power from the imbalance of feng shui. The ghosts of the past now haunt the students of the school.

Ji-won, a music teacher, had discovered the school’s past and began to study it. He believed that he could resurrect the dead using the power of feng shui in the area. One day, a bereaved visited him and asked him to resurrect her daughter. Ji-won decided to help her out to prove his theory. Things did not go according to plan.

Already the confusion begins. The second edition of White Day: A Labyrinth Named School is more commonly referred to as ‘White Day Mobile’. It was, in case you hadn’t guessed, a mobile port of the first title. And to confuse matters even further, there are two versions of White Day for mobile platforms.

This 2009 version was made by Ntreev Soft and is a 2D version of the original game. The game follows a similar plot to the original game, however it also includes its some unique documents featured exclusively in this version of the game. The other is a complete remake of the original game.

A third title with the exact same name. The 2015 edition of the game was the above mentioned second mobile title. Then, in 2017, a remake for PlayStation 4 and PC launched which, unsurprisingly, also had the same name. So now we have four different releases all known as White Day: A Labyrinth Named School. Geez.

White Day: A Labyrinth Named School – this edition of the game – was also brought to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 in 2022. This version features graphical improvements and new additions to the gameplay. It also adds a brand new storyline which introduces Yoo Ji-min, a new character tied to the original plot.

White Day 2: Swan Song (Unreleased)

Back in 2015, Sonnori announced that the series would finally get a true successor. White Day 2: Swan Song was set to be a prequel of the original title in development for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR.

A few details about how the school layout would be rearranged and intro to the plot were revealed, before the game disappeared. Little is known about how or why development on White Day 2: Swan Song came to an end. Especially confusing as the PlayStation VR version was publicly showcased before the disappearence.

So the first true sequel for the popular White Day series was a VR-exclusive. A little odd, but that’s how this story goes.

The game debuted at a single VR arcade location in South Korea in 2018, before launching on Steam in 2020. White Day VR: The Courage Test is an immersive VR experience that sees players returning to Yeondu High School. In order to gain entry into the Occult Club students must undertake the “Courage Test”. But when senior Occult Club member Da-Hee Kim informs you that the test has been bought forward a day, how do you know if she can be trusted?

White Day VR: The Courage Test remains a PC VR exclusive, despite Sonnori’s previous interest in PlayStation VR. Sadly, it looks unlikely that the PSVR 2 will a release of White Day VR: The Courage Test. It’s not exactly considered one of the best VR horror games.

And now we come to today. White Day 2: The Flower That Tells Lies is the true sequel to the original White Day that was birthed from the ashes of White Day 2: Swan Song. Instead of a prequel, White Day 2: The Flower That Tells Lies takes place in 2001, one day after the initial incident at Yeondu High.

White Day 2: The Flower That Tells Lies was initially released on PC episodically. Three episodes tell the tale of four characters who return to the school in search of answers to the unsolved mysteries that haunt them.

White Day 2: The Flower That Tells Lies Complete Edition was announced earlier this week for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The latter of which is available now.
