Obscure Dreamcast exclusive games are always an interesting topic of discussion. Sega’s ill-fated foray into the 128-bit era launched with plenty of clout, but just didn’t have the stopping power to prevent the mighty PlayStation 2 from dominating the generation. As such, there are numerous classic titles on the console that few have ever had the chance to play. Slowly, title by title, this is changing. The latest former Dreamcast exclusive to make the jump is the upcoming Rainbow Cotton.

What is Rainbow Cotton?

Rainbow Cotton made it’s debut 24 years ago as a Dreamcast exclusive. Developed by Success, the title was the fifth installment in the Cotton franchise, and the first 3D entry in the series. In the game, you assume the role of a young witch. Alongside your fairy companion Silk, you set out on a quest to defeat the evil demon Tweed and retrieve a stolen Willow candy from York Country.

The game received a warm reception in its native Japan. However, here in the west the response was mixed. Mostly because the game was only available via import, without a localisation. That all changes now though, as the upcoming remake will mark Rainbow Cotton‘s western debut.

So, this is a Remake?

Well, sort of. The game will closely resemble the original, but with some modern touches. For example, this 2024 edition includes updated graphics and English localisation. Which is nice. It also adds widescreen support and full HD.

More interesting however, are a number of quality of life updates. Rainbow Cotton will now support a two-player mode, lock-on targeting and an updated user interface.

To accompany the news, ININ also published a two-minute video explaining why they are labelling this release a remake.

Rainbow Cotton Release Date

Rainbow Cotton is set to launch later this week. The game will be available from 9th May, 2024. It will launch simultaneously on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

PlayStation 4 has previously received a title in the Cotton series all of it’s own: Cotton Fantasy. However, as stated above, this release of Rainbow Cotton marks the first time the game has been released in the west, and on any format other than the Dreamcast.
