Eastasiasoft have recently been ramping up their summer line-up, and horror games seem to be a big feature. The recent launch of SENSEs: Midnight will soon be accompanied by The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation. And now, a new horror experience, The Red Exile, has creeped into view.
The Red Exile promises to deliver something a bit different. A first-person survival horror game, The Red Exile adds a roguelike twist. Similarly to popular VR horror game Cosmodread, every playthrough is randomised across a procedurally generated map. However, developer NipoBox is aware that randomly generated environments can often lead to bland runs. So, instead of using an identikit base, The Red Exile layers hand-crafted puzzles on top of the random maps.
Launched on Steam in June last year, the game received much acclaim for this unique approach. However, it was also criticised for a lack of polish. Hopefully this past year of further development will see the console editions arrive in better form.
The Red Exile Gameplay
In The Red Exile, your task is to perform an exile rite. Why? Because throughout your are being pursued by a maniac. You must rid this realm of him before he gets the jump on you.
Players must outsmart, evade and fend off their pursuer any way possible. All the while, you must explore to locate items that unlock new rooms in the hope of completing the ritual. But be careful, the AI-powered pursuer learns from the actions you take and gradually grows stronger.
As you progress you can collect perks to unlock new abilities and stack the deck in your favor. Can you adapt and survive this deadly game of cat and mouse?
