It has been over 10 years since director Zack Snyder released the surreal sci-fi adventure Sucker Punch. While a significant time has already elapsed, Snyder hasn’t forgotten about the movie. He recently teased in an interview that he’d like to do a Sucker Punch director’s cut.

Sucker Punch is one of Snyder’s more unusual movies when compared to his more recent DC projects. Starring Emily Browning in the lead role of Babydoll, the supporting cast included Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone and Abbie Cornish. Locked in a mental hospital, Babydoll imagines a fantastical, alternate world. This leads to a confusing ending where she’s lobotomized.

However, the theatrical ending wasn’t what Snyder originally planned. A Blu-ray release added a further 18 minutes to the runtime but the director wants to go further.

“I’ve never gotten around to doing the director’s cut. I still plan to at some point,” Snyder said in an interview with Letterboxd. “But in the original ending, when Babydoll is in the chair in the basement with Blue – she’s already been lobotomized – when the cop shines the light on her, the set breaks apart and she stands up and she sings a song on stage. Yeah. She sings, ‘Ooh, Child, things are gonna get easier.’

“Blondie, and all the people that have been killed, join in and it’s the idea that in a weird way, even though she’s lobotomized, she’s kind of stuck in this infinite loop of euphoric victory. It’s weirdly not optimistic and optimistic at the same time. That’s kind of what the tone was at the end. We tested it and the studio thought it was too weird, so we changed it.”

Considering it’s been over a decade already since the original release, Snyder hasn’t said when he might begin work on a new cut. He’s well-known for massively adding content, with Zack Snyder’s Justice League greatly extending the runtime of the DCEU film.
