First announced back in 2019, Hotel Barcelona is a collaboration between videogame luminaries Suda51 and Swery65. However, there was no trailer or even screenshots for the game. Instead, it was a more conversational reveal. Since then, things have been decidedly quiet. That was until this year’s Tokyo Game Show, where Hotel Barcelona was revealed as part of the Xbox showcase.
The long-awaited collaboration between Swery65 and Suda51 will be a “2.5D slasher film parodic action” game. The game draws influences from across the history of horror’s entertainment. You’ll be facing everything from alien entities to AI-enhanced sharks, all while stuck in an endless time loop filled with serial killers. So, who’s on your team? Your deceased past selves. Because, of course.
Both Swery65 and Suda51 appeared in the show to discuss the game. Swery discussed the game’s unusual beginnings. Apparently, Suda51 asked him to announce a collaboration on the fly, with no prior discussion. They then referenced and his inspirations from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
Suda51 explained that he and Swery worked on the initial concept together. “Then, all of a sudden, Swery completed tons of work on the development, and Hotel Barcelona materialised. Most of the time, when someone does lip service like that, the project never materialises… But Swery made this project a reality in order to deliver something to the fans.”
Hotel Barcelona is currently confirmed for launch on Xbox Series X|S in 2024. It’s not yet known whether the game will come to other platforms.
