The saga of the Octopath Traveler series had been an odd one. Original announced as a Nintendo Switch exclusive, the game ended up being ported to near every modern format bar PlayStation. It came as something of a surprise then, when the sequel was announced for Nintendo Switch, PC and PlayStation consoles. No love for Xbox from Square Enix. Today however, that has changed, as Octopath Traveler II has been announced for launch on Xbox consoles in 2024.

Developed by the same team as the original, Octopath Traveler II has been well received by critics and consumers alike. The game improves upon the series’ HD-2D visuals, offering a striking blend of retro 2D characters in a beautiful 3D world. The game’s new storyline, characters and features mean it acts as a standalone entry, and as such is welcoming for newcomers to the series. Perhaps this is why Square Enix saw no need to port the original to PlayStation before releasing the sequel.

Xbox fans have had a bumpy road with Square Enix of late. While the likes of Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core Reunion launched on Xbox consoles, few other titles have made their way to the format. That includes the lauded Final Fantasy VII Remake, and the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

However, now Xbox gamers can look forward to following the journey of eight distinct protagonists as they explore the land and conquer enemies in strategic turn-based battles on an adventure all their own. Octopath Traveler II will be available on Xbox and Windows PC in early 2024. The game is already available to purchase now on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation5, PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam.
