Right off the bat in this Trolls Remix Rescue review, we’re going to come out and say that if you’re not of the age that the Trolls franchise appeals to, than neither will this game. It’s a tie-in title. Not in a cool way like Disney Classic Games Collection or Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl. Trolls Remix Rescue is a game based on a franchise, intended solely for fans of that franchise. So, you have a pre-teen at home that you’re looking to entertain? Trolls Remix Rescue is for you.
The gameplay loop is based on some fairly generic platforming. Running, jumping, sliding, collecting gems, avoiding been blown off cliffs and occasional speed run challenges. There’s also a bit of rhythm action thrown in to boot. All of this is pretty straight forward, which may sound like a criticism. However, for a game aimed squarely at children, this actually works in Trolls Remix Rescue‘s favour.
For the most part, the game delivers its action on wide open levels, with obvious pathways to proceed along. So intuitive is the design of the challenges in fact, that there’s little need for any kind of tutorial. It’s simple run-and-run gameplay that even the most ardent platform fan can find enjoyment in when playing with young children. Not every game needs to be Shakespeare; Trolls Remix Rescue is happy just being, well, Trolls.
Trolls Remix Rescue is not a no-fail game, though it comes close. Especially when the personal health recovery ability is unlocked early on in the game. While the challenge may be low, there’s enough distraction that the game can take several hours to explore to its fullest. There are frequently multiple options for which pathway to take to reach the end of the level. What’s more, there’s often secret routes that can lead to bonus gems, hidden items or – rather oddly – nothing at all.
While Trolls Remix Rescue may be enjoyable when played with your pre-teens, it’s not a technical marvel by any means. This isn’t Super Mario Odyssey. It’s not even Kao the Kangaroo. But then, what parent is buying Trolls Remix Rescue for their 5-10 year-olds and expecting Spider-Man 2 levels of technical competency? There are numerous graphical glitches throughout the game and even egregious errors such as hills with no floor, allowing the player to run – or fall – right through them. If they occurred far in the distance and could only be found by sheer luck or incompetency you could forgive such errors. However, they are not. They are in fact frequently right next to the areas the core gameplay is happening.
So, this review of Trolls Remix Rescue presents a decidedly mixed bag, then. It’s flawed, of that there is no doubt. But it does present enough of an enjoyable gameplay experience that your young child won’t regret playing. And for you as a parent, there are certainly worse ways to spend an afternoon. Children can create and dress up their Troll however they wish, and there’s idle distractions outside the core game with more rhythm-action mini games. Trolls Remix Rescue isn’t a game to write home about, but it is a fine Saturday afternoon with your mini-me’s.
