Digital Cybercherries has become quite infamous in certain circles over the past few years. Their debut title, the VR-infused New Retro Arcade: Neon, launched in 2019 to a slightly muted yet positive reception. The PC release of the studio’s second title followed a year later, and at this point began an extensive social media campaign. Digital Cybercherries wanted you to know they wanted to bring Hypercharge: Unboxed to consoles – particularly Xbox consoles – and they wanted you to want it.
Hypercharge: Unboxed Setting
In Hypercharge: Unboxed, you must help Sergeant Max Ammo to defeat Major Evil’s nefarious plans. There was once an ancient line of action figures who created a magical power source. This would allow humans to keep their favourite childhood memories of their toys. This ancient power source is known as the Hypercore.
Inside the Hypercore are the beloved memories of our favorite toys. If Major Evil destroys it, these memories will disappear forever. You must join the plastic ranks to defend it with everything you’ve got, or see our cherished toys turn into lost treasures of the past.
Gameplay
Hypercharge: Unboxed is the first and third-person shooter game. You’ll take on the role of an action figure as you play through a campaign with up to three friends. That’s right, the entire campaign mode is playable solo or with up to four-players online in co-op. The game features dynamic difficulty scaling depending on the number of players.
The gameplay is centered around waves, like a Horde mode. Rather than deep diving through linear level structure, you’ll be encountering increasingly difficult waves of enemies which you must defeat to progress. These enemies can take the form of toy soldiers, robots and even dinosaurs!
PvP Multiplayer
If you’re feeling more competitive than collaborative, the game also features an array of PvP modes. There’s also a number of ‘classic’ PVP multiplayer modes for up to eight players, which allows for split-screen and online gameplay. Defend the Hypercore with your friends, survive waves of relentless hordes of weaponised toys, or enjoy a good old-fashioned free-for-all rumble.
What’s more, if you’re not interested in playing against strangers you can play these modes offline with bots.
Grab your friends, complete objectives, defend the Hypercore against waves of weaponised toys, and defeat Major Evil together in the story campaign. Or battle it out head-to-head in either split-screen or online multiplayer.
Hypercharge: Unboxed Release Date
Hypercharge: Unboxed is already available for PC and Nintendo Switch. Developer Digital Cybercherries recently announced the Hypercharge: Unboxed Xbox release date. This includes both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles.
Hypercharge: Unboxed is coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One on 31st May, 2024. The Xbox edition of the game will feature crossplay with the PC edition. However, there’s no word on whether the Nintendo Switch edition will also offer crossplay compatibility.
