Hydro Thunder was a hugely popular racing game at the turn of the century. Debuting in arcades in 1999, the home console releases that followed were huge commercial successes. Now, it seems that Midnight Works have taken inspiration from the series for something a bit different: Race Boat Simulator Racing.

Race Boat Simulator Racing is promising to deliver ‘heart-stopping races’ amidst ‘breathtaking’ oceanic landscapes and exotic islands. Midnight Works’ latest press release is unsurprisingly full of hyperbole. But in reality, the game does looks interesting. And that’s mostly because of it’s track design. Despite the ‘simulator’ in the title, the game has some decidedly eccentric locals for players to race through. Check it out for yourself in the below Race Boat Simulator Racing trailer.

If this doesn’t remind you of Hydro Thunder, I’m not sure what will.

According to Midnight Works, players will ‘experience mind-blowing graphics and realistic ocean settings’. You can select from a variety of racing-style boats, each with its own unique features. As you race, you can collect coins scattered along the way and use them to unlock powerful modifications for your boat. Oh so Hydro Thunder Hurricane.

Race Boat Simulator Racing will also feature changing weather conditions. You’ll have to navigate through storms, turbulent waves, and adapt your strategy on the fly.

Race Boat Simulator Racing is set to join Midnight Works’ catalogue of PlayStation games on 6th February, 2024. The publisher has significantly impacted the PlayStation 5 line-up recently, with the likes of Buried Alive: Breathless Rescue, Pigeon Simulator Survival, Wolf Simulator: RPG Survival Animal Battle and Drift Reign. Urban Thief Simulator: The Ultimate Heist also recently launched for PlayStation 4.
