Ahead of its launch later this year, developer Star Drifters has begun an open playtest for First Dwarf this week. Freely available through Steam, in the First Dwarf playtest you can jump in a gigantic mech and begin uncovering the mysteries of Driftland.
Mixing survival, colony management, tower defence, and action RPG elements, you become dwarven explorer Tru. Thanks to your dwarven engineering skills you can repair and pilot a powerful mech that offers a range of gameplay opportunities. Driftland’s floating islands are a dangerous place, so you’ll have to build infrastructure and defences for the future colonists.

Using your mech to gather resources, build structures and fight enemies, it needs to be kept in premium shape. Upgrades allow you to improve its offensive arsenal, whilst exploration will help unlock new gadgets, weapons and structures. You’re not quite a one-person army either. Build tower defences for when you’re not about, preparing not only for monster waves but also natural disasters.
First Dwarf also features Ragna, a she-dragon, as a playable companion. Small in size and with the ability to fly and breathe fire, she makes an ideal sidekick you can control. Or, you can play the game in co-op (split screen and online) so that each player can perform different tasks.
Building colonies also means looking after the inhabitants. Provide them with resources, shelter, and entertainment to boost their happiness. This will allow Tru to pursue his own personal goal – discovering what happened to the previous dwarven expeditions and his father.
The First Dwarf playtest is available now on Steam. The full official launch is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch later this year.
