The biggest JRPG launch of early 2022, Edge of Eternity arrives later this month. However, there’s been very little hype for the game. Here’s everything you need to know about it, and why JPRG fans should be interested.
Edge of Eternity Launch
First up, when exactly can you play Edge of Eternity?
Originally debuting as an Early Access title on PC in 2018, Edge of Eternity officially released via Steam last year. Now the game is finally going to release for console.
Good news for Xbox Series X|S gamers, as Edge of Eternity is going to arrive on Xbox Game Pass at launch. From day one Xbox Series and Xbox One gamers can jump straight into Edge of Eternity, provided they have a valid Xbox Game Pass subscription.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 gamers can pre-order the game ahead of it’s 10th February 2022 launch date.
The console version is set to receive all current and future updates and fixes of the PC version.
Gameplay
The game’s combat is turn-based. Battles take place on a hexagonal grid, so players can also strategically arrange their characters during the fights. The system also makes use of a system similar to the Final Fantasy series’ ATB (Active Time Battle).
Elsewhere, Edge of Eternity follows many typical tropes of JRPGs. This includes exploration, character progressions systems and a deep story supported by a host of paper-thin characters.
Story
Much of the appeal of JRPGs is the huge worlds that players can explore. Edge of Eternity is set in Hyrone. The land has been under attack from the Archelites for decades. The technologically advanced Archelites have also created a virus known as the Corrosion, which turns people into vicious monsters. While Hyrone has been able to keep the Corrosion at bay, no cure has been found.
The player will follow siblings Daryon and Selene as they attempt to find a cure for the Corrosion. Daryon is a soldier who has become disillusioned with the war, and Selene is a priestess. Players will, of course, meet a number of allies along the way who can join their party.
Edge of Eternity Development
Developed by a French team, Midgar Studio, fans of the genre may well recognise that the studio is named after a city from Final Fantasy VII. The game was initially crowdfunded in 2013 via Kickstarter. Following that successful campaign, the team set about creating their love letter to classics JRPGs. The eventual PC release was met with reviews that mostly praised the story and visual design. Music for the game was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and Cedric Menendez. Mitsuda is well-known for his work in JRPGs, including Chrono Trigger.
Edge of Eternity may not revolutionize JRPG-style games, but it is a thoughtful attempt to modernize the genre. The game is available now on PC, and will release on 10th February 2022, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
