Headup Games and Goody Gameworks recently announced that the retro-inspired side scrolling city-smasher Gigapocalypse is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The game will launch on 2nd June, 2022. But what exactly is Gigapocalypse?
Inspired by Kaiju monster movies like Godzilla and King Kong, Gigapocalypse gives players a roster of monsters, known as “Gigas”, to choose from. They are tasked with one simple goal: to reduce cities to rubble! The game plays to the beat of a heavy metal soundtrack as the player, for once, is not the hero. Instead, you’ll be hell bent on destruction.
With every run you undertake to try and get to each location’s boss, your Giga will become more powerful and earn mutation points. You’ll fail. But that’s OK, as you can spend these points to upgrade your Giga with new mutations, skills, skins. You can even recruit up to five tiny minion pets who will accompany you on your outings of urban destruction.
Once the brawling is done you must take care of your Giga in Tamagotchi-style minigames. There’s also the opportunity to decorate your Giga’s home with items that will improve your Giga’s stats, making them even more menacing.
Gigapocalypse offers nine monsters to choose from: three ‘Old Gods’, three prehistoric monstrosities and three horrors from outer space. You can take these beasts of destruction into a host of fun city locations from across multiple timelines, ranging from the Wild West to the modern day. Goody Gameworks suggests that gaming classic Rampage helped inspire the action. However, we can’t help but feel there’s a bit of King of Monsters and even more modern titles such as Override 2 in there.
Gigapocalypse Trailer & Release Date
The debut trailer for Gigapocalypse is available below. The game is currently in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. The Xbox One version will of course also be compatible with Xbox Series X|S. We’d expect the PlayStation 4 version to be playable on PlayStation 5, but have no confirmation of this at present.
