One of the great things about the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes is the disparity between critics’ opinions and the general public. The latest film to highlight this is Five Nights at Freddy’s, the Blumhouse production released over the weekend. It had a stellar opening, making a financial killing in the process.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Five Nights at Freddy’s only has a 28 percent critic rating. Whilst the audience score is much higher at 89 percent. However, it’s in the ticket sales where the numbers really matter. The horror debut managed $80 million USD in North America and $132 million globally. When you consider the film only cost $20 million to make and launched via streaming service Peacock at the same time, those are some great numbers.

Freddy shakes things up
Based on the videogame of the same name, the film stars Josh Hutcherson who gets a new job as a nighttime security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Unfortunately for him, the seemingly loveable and child-friendly animatronics housed within the entertainment centre aren’t all they make out to be. They have a murderous agenda nad just like the game, Hutcherson has to survive the night.
However, Five Nights at Freddy’s isn’t an 18-rated gore fest. It’s only rated a PG-13, and thanks to the Halloween timed release, these are both believed to have worked in the film’s favour. Equally important, since development began in 2015, the film has always focused on delivering a project for the fans.
It’s so fun when it works. Thank you all so much for being patient with us on #fnaf we wanted to get it just right for the fans,” said Jason Blum on X (formerly Twitter). “That’s all we were focused on. We appreciate you. Thank you for the amazing weekend.”
