If you’re a fan of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi series Dune you’ll likely know that it contains over 20 books. The original Dune (1965) has always been a seminal piece of work, which director Denis Villeneuve has turned into two movies. Whilst Dune: Part 2 has been delayed until 2024, Villeneuve would love to continue, with a Dune 3 movie being his dream.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, the director spoke about a third instalment. This would be based on Herbert’s Dune Messiah. “If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream,” said Villeneuve. “Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero. Which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning.”

A Dune Dream

Dune was released in 2021 to worldwide acclaim, with an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The second instalment has been eagerly awaited since, with the theatrical release originally slated for November 2023. Fans are now going to have to wait until 15th March 2024 to enjoy its conclusion.

This means it might take some time for Villeneuve’s ‘dream’ of a Dune 3 movie to come to fruition. However, he does tease that rather than some flirtatious idea, “There are words on paper.” If this were to come to pass, the director notes that he would move on to new projects afterwards. This is because: “After [Dune Messiah] the books become more… esoteric.”

Dune: Part Two features an all-star cast including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Dave Bautista and many more. Chalamet takes the central role of Paul Atredis, who joins forces with the Fremen, natives of the planet Arrakis in their war against the Harkonnens.
