Teenage Mutant Ninja… chipmunks. Niemi Bros Entertainment’s Chipmonk! launches today, bringing with it more than a dash of ’90s scrolling beat-’em-up stylings. Published by QUByte Interactive, Chipmonk! is available from today for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
The gluttonous gray squirrel has stolen all the land’s food stores, threatening the forest’s inhabitants with starvation. Players will embark on a perilous journey as a chipmunk martial arts master — Grey, Cheeks or Red — and battle a multitude of foes in a heroic attempt to recover the stolen food.
The team behind the game openly state that Chipmonk! is ‘a retro-inspired beat-’em-up’ starring chipmunk warriors. I mean, it would be very hard not to suggest as such. Looking at the trailer (below), you can easily see that retro flavour. In particular, SEGA’s once golden child, Golden Axe, with it’s slow and more methodical combat action.
Chipmonk! includes all the standard features you would expect from a modern scrolling beat-’em-up. Two player local co-op, multiple game modes and three playable characters. We’re not sure why the developers didn’t go whole ‘munk and offer three player co-op, seeing as there’s three characters available.

With the current deluge of beat-’em-ups hitting the market, Chipmonk! certainly has it’s work cut out for it. Inspired by the success of Streets of Rage 4, we now have competent new Double Dragon and TMNT games. That’s not to mention the likes of the likes of Last Beat Enhanced and the forthcoming Fallen City Brawl.
Does Chipmonk! have what it takes to win the prized golden nut? you can find out from today on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Let us know in the comments below if you’re planning on picking this one up!
