Guillermo del Toro is a renowned director, with his film catalogue including The Shape of Water, Pacific Rim, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth and many more. So the idea of teaming the director with a Star Wars project would’ve been welcomed by fans. As it turns out, Del Toro had been working on a Star Wars movie featuring Jabba the Hutt.
Details first surfaced last month during the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. Screenwriter David S. Goyer had worked on the project with Del Toro, revealing that it had a “cool script”. Responding on X (formerly Twitter) Del Toro said: “True. Can’t say much. Maybe two letters “J” and “BB” is that three letters?”
Jabba misses out
Further details have now surfaced thanks to an interview with Collider. The director confirms that this infamous crime lord was the focus of the project.
“We had the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy,” said Del Toro. “We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it’s not my property, it’s not my money, and then it’s one of those 30 screenplays that goes away. Sometimes I’m bitter, sometimes I’m not. I always turn to my team and say, ‘Good practice, guys. Good practice. We designed a great world. We designed great stuff. We learned.’
“You can never be ungrateful with life. Whatever life sends you, there’s something to be learned from it,” he continued. “So, you know, I trust the universe, I do. When something doesn’t happen, I go, ‘Why?’ I try to have a dialogue with myself. ‘Why didn’t it happen?’ And the more you swim upstream with the universe, the less you’re gonna realize where you’re going.”
What’s unclear is when Del Toro and S. Goyer were working on the project. While Disney has seen success with TV shows like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian, it’s stance of late has been to cut costs and wind back productions.
