At the moment we’re loving Disney+’s Ahsoka, especially after the epic fifth episode. But we know it’ll come to an end and then what’s next? Well, if you were looking forward to Donald Glover’s return as Lando Calrissian then you might be equally disappointed and delighted by some recent news. The Lando Disney+ series is no more, with a feature film planned instead.

The news came by way of Donald’s brother Stephen Glover, who has ben working on the project with him. During a recent episode of the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast, Stephen said: “It’s not even a show,” he said. “The idea right now is to do a movie. … Right now because of the strike, it’s like [a game of] telephone.”

Deadline has also confirmed the news with insiders regarding the pivot.

Donald Glover Lando Calrissian Solo

A Lando Feature Film

The Lando TV series was confirmed by Disney back in 2020. But since then the streaming platform has rolled back its extensive content plans, spacing out its programming to help deliver cost savings.

Glover originally played Calrissian in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. By Star Wars standards the film wasn’t a success, grossing $392.9m USD globally. Whilst fans weren’t particularly receptive to the standalone film, Glover’s portrayal of the character was a highlight. He took over the role from Billy Dee Williams who played Lando in The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.

While it’s great to hear the project is still going ahead in a new form, when that will happen is another matter. As Glover mentions, the strikes mean making anything in the US currently is very difficult. The SAG-AFTRA strikes have been going on for several months now, shutting down productions and delaying completed projects. Dune: Part 2 has been delayed until 2024, while production on Deadpool 3 and Tron: Ares have been delayed indefinitely.
