While 1997’s Spawn wasn’t exactly the best comic book to movie adaption, it’s gained something of a cult status. And with all the success of recent Marvel and DC adaptions, you may have wondered why a Spawn reboot hasn’t happened yet. Well, it’s on its way and being produced by Blumhouse Jason Blum. Details are thin on the ground for the Spawn reboot but Blum has teased it’ll feature some Blumhouse magic.
The production company behind the likes of Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Exorcist: Believer is currently working on rebooting Spawn for mature audiences. Talking to ScreenRant during NYCC earlier this month, Blum remarked: “I’m going to bring the Blumhouse edge. It’s going to be edgy and original as compared to other superhero movies. It’s gonna definitely feel like the Blumhouse version of a superhero movie.”
Considering the company’s previous films, that’s highly positive for Spawn.
Spawn to return
The Spawn reboot has been known about for at least a year, but work on bringing it to life has taken much longer. Comic book legend Todd McFarlane has been working on this project for years, originally serving as both writer and director. Mainly because he knows the character better than anyone. It seems as though he’s now taken a step back from both of those roles ComicBook.com claims.
“My original plan has gotten tripped up a bit,” McFarlane told the website. “You deal with a lot, given Hollywood. None of that should be surprising. But, you start bringing on A-list people. And we’re bringing on A-list people. Not just one, but multiple A-list people. And, it’s going to continue to grow… What they’re not going to want is to do a cheap, low-budget movie with all of these big-name people on it. That’s not why they’re signing up. They’re not looking for a big extravaganza. But, they’re also not looking for an 8 million dollar horror movie budget.”
Currently, no details have been released regarding the story or who the director might be. However, Jamie Foxx has been confirmed to be playing the titular role of Al Simmons, aka Spawn.
The Spawn reboot doesn’t have an expected release date as of now.
