One of the most successful films of 2023 was Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. A collaborative effort involving Illumination and Nintendo, it became the highest-grossing animated movie ever. After its theatrical run, the film landed on NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service on 3rd August. Next month The Super Mario Bros. Movie will arrive on Netflix.
Currently, as Deadline reports, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will only be available on Netflix in the US. No other territories have yet been confirmed. But its arrival on the platform should mean a wider release at some point. Or you could use a VPN to get around the location issue.
A Super Mario success
With the holiday season arriving quickly Netflix is preparing a slate of new releases. Alongside Super Mario, you can also expect to see the following movies:
- Best. Christmas. Ever! – 16th November
- Leo – 21st November
- The Bad Guys: A Very Bad Holiday – 30th November
- Family Switch – 30th November
- Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget – 15th December
- Pokémon Concierge – premieres in December
Acquiring The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be a huge boon for Netflix. Its theatrical release grossed $1.36 billion – the first 2023 film to breach the $1B mark – and became Illumination’s biggest to date. The animation house is known for Despicable Me, the Minions spinoffs and Sing.
The movie is an origin story where two Brooklyn plumbers fall into a mysterious pipe that sends them to the Mushroom Kingdom. While Mario lands in the realm ruled by Princess Peach, his brother Luigi finds himself in the Dark Lands with the evil Bowser. Without spoiling too much – this is a game adaption after all – Mario must stop Bowser’s plans.
It stars Chris Pratt as Mario (Jurassic World), Charlie Day (Pacific Rim) as Luigi and Anya Taylor-Joy (Last Night in Soho) as Princess Peach.
