It has been 50 years since The Exorcist first graced cinemas, shocking audiences and creating a cult horror franchise in the process. So it’s fitting that later this year a new film will arrive to make a whole new generation of horror fans scream in terror. So here’s everything you need to know about The Exorcist: Believer.

Directed by David Gordon Green – the same guy who rebooted Halloween – he co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Sattler. This was developed from a story by Green, Scott Teems, and Danny McBride.

The Exorcist: Believer will arrive in theatres on 13th October 2023.

Is The New Exorcist a remake or sequel?

It is actually a reboot and sequel all in one. Green has confirmed that The Exorcist: Believer will continue on from the 1973 original whilst rebooting the franchise for a modern audience. The new film will also form the start of a threequel, with Green planning two further instalments.

Pazuzu, the same demonic presence from the previous films returns once again. However, this time it possesses two girls, who have gone missing from school. They are later found in the woods changed and unaware that they were gone for three days.

The Exorcist 2023 Trailer

Unfortunately, Universal Pictures has yet to release a public trailer for The Exorcist: Believer. There are several ‘fan-made’ trailers online but an official one has yet to appear. All the information we know so far has come from The Exorcist: Believer trailer shown behind closed doors at CinemaCon 2023 in April.

Surprisingly, that’s not been leaked so far.

The upcoming film will feature old and new faces alike. New to the franchise is Grammy award winner Leslie Odom Jr. starring as a father of a possessed child. Ellen Burstyn reprises her role as Chris MacNeil from the original film. Joining them are:

How many Exorcist remakes are there?

While the original 1973 version was iconic, the films that followed didn’t quite live up to it. Even so, they’ve helped ensure the franchise has a cult following amongst horror fans. So if you want to see what the whole saga is about, there are 5 films to watch.

Spoiler: Exorcist: The Beginning and Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist are essentially the same movies. Dominion was made first, directed by Paul Schrader but Morgan Creek Productions wasn’t happy with it. So director Renny Harlin was brought in to create The Beginning, using new and previously shot footage. Watch both and see which one you prefer!
