For those looking for a nightmarish 2D platformer then Unlife could well fit the bill. Developed by indie Diedermor Studio and published by Ratalaika Games (Twice Reborn: A Vampire Visual Novel), the upcoming narrative-driven adventure will hit consoles at the beginning of March.
You’re an unnamed character who awakens in a dark and apocalyptic world destroyed by nuclear war. All that remains is the Black Ocean, monsters galore and oceanic stations just below the surface. But there’s more to worry about than mutated humans and sea creatures.
You’re infected with a parasite that’ll eventually kill you, the only way to survive is to harvest genetic material from the creatures you kill. Only their DNA can help create a cure to destroy the parasite.
Surviving Unlife
In this 2D platformer, you’ll be able to explore submarines from the Second World War, swim underwater, and search for weapons and supplies. By finding useful resources, you can create items on the workbench necessary for survival. All of which you’ll need, especially when you encounter horrifying entities like the colossal Kraken.
“I love this game for its atmosphere, unique world, and setting,” says solo developer Dmitriy. “I managed to create a wonderful soundtrack that accentuates the character’s solitude in this dark adventure. I’m proud to have successfully completed this challenging project, which is one of the most complex ones for me so far.”
Furthermore, the game also features two endings. Good and bad, depending on how successful you were in removing the parasite.
Unlife will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch on 1st March 2024. On all platforms, it’ll be priced at $9.99 USD / €9.99 EUR.
