The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) features a host of actors that have previously worked in various different franchises. Karen Gillan, who plays the role of Nebula, is one such actor. It appears that Gillan is still fond of her previous works, though it’s not always at the forefront of her mind.
Gillan’s Nebula was first introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy, where she took on the role of antagonist for Zoe Saldana’s Gamora. Gamora is Nebula’s adopted sister, as they both fight to earn the love and respect of their father, Thanos. However, Gamora is quick to turn her back on the man who slaughtered her family. Eventually, so too does Nebula.
It’s as the story progresses for these two characters that Gillan committed an act that she regrets. Or rather, didn’t. During Avengers: Endgame, there is a scene in which several heroes – including Nebula – prepare to travel back in time using Pym Particles. While discussing how time travel works, the characters mention several iconic films including Hot Tub Time Machine and Back to the Future. During the filming of the scene however, Karen Gillan reveals how she completely ignored the fact that she rose to fame in one such series: Doctor Who.
Karen Gillan as Amy Pond
Gillan famously played Doctor Who companion Amy Pond between 2010 and 2013, alongside the Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith. Smith himself recently joined the MCU in the heavily berated Morbius.
Of course, prior to this point in the story it’s unlikely Nebula would ever have visited Earth. And thus, she wouldn’t know what Doctor Who is. However, it could’ve been a tasty little reference had one of the other heroes mentioned it.
Karen Gillan reveals her return to the MCU in the forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is currently expected to release in May 2023. Are you a fan of Gillan’s portrayal of Nebula? Let us know in the comments below!
