The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has seen numerous cameos over the years. The latest theatrical release, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, was no different. Along with The Evil Dead‘s Bruce Campbell – a regular inclusion by director Sam Raimi – The Office‘s John Krasinski’s Doctor Strange cameo made an appearance. However, his turn in the MCU was just for kicks, according to Raimi.
About halfway through Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the titular wizard finds himself lost in the multiverse. America Chavez and the doctor find themselves in an alternate reality. Here, the local Doctor Strange is dead and the superhero team of said universe is not the Avengers. Instead, the Illuminati is in control. This team consists of fan-favourite cameos from beloved superheroes and actors, as well as Black Bolt of the Inhumans.
John Krasinski’s Doctor Strange Cameo
One of those cameos in particular is of note. John Krasinski’s Doctor Strange cameo sees him take on the role of Reed Richards of The Fantastic Four. This was apparently recognition of years of fan-casting. Audiences around the world have made it note that Krasinski looks a fair amount like the character. This version of Reed Richards meets a grisly death at the hands of Elizabeth Olsen, but anyone hoping that Krasinski’s casting is a tease for future MCU adventures will be disappointed.
The commentary track for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness features a moment where Raimi notes that Krasinski playing Reed Richards was a decision made by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige. Apparently, it was specifically done because, “Fans had a dream of who the perfect Reed Richards would be.”
According to Raimi, Krasinski was chosen just for that reason. Raimi also specifically says that Feige wanted “that dream” to come true in this “alternate universe,” which seems to imply that the canonical main universe version of Reed Richards will not end up being John Krasinski.
