Two franchises that need introduction, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Street Fighter and about to open a new chapter. IDW has announced a five-issue miniseries bringing the two together in a comic book for the first time. Here’s hoping it can be as awesome as it sounds.

Street Fighter is taking to 2023 in a big way. Not only are we set to receive the long awaited Street Fighter: Duel imminently, but of course we also have the Street Fighter 6 launch date set for this summer. The franchise began as a video game, and has now been a part of mainstream culture for over 35 years.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles however, began life as a comic book series. The heroes-on-a-half-shell are a true transmedia franchise, with action figures, movies, cartoons and much more. And of course, the TMNT games have quite a legacy, too.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vs. Street Fighter

Publisher IDW has revealed that the five-issue miniseries will launch in May 2023. Written by Paul Allor, the series will feature art by Ariel Medel and colors by Sarah Myer.

The story begins as the turtles arrive in Atlantic City for a fighting tournament where they run into the Street Fighter crew. A wave of disappearances around the town and some mystery around the tournament’s benefactors bring depth to an exploration of the two franchises.

The interactions between the two franchises might not be what you expect. However, the premise promises to deliver some interesting subplot. According to Allor:

“From Mikey and Chun-Li’s unlikely bond to Raph and Guile’s rivalry and mutual – but very grudging – respect.”

So far we’ve seen the cover art and two preview pages (below). Here, we can see Raphael and Guile going head-to-head in a ring of sorts. And unfortunately, it looks like Guile is coming off on the wrong end of Raph’s anger.

Both franchises have historically been big on crossover events. The turtles have had comic books featuring characters from numerous other IPs, and even appeared in Injustice 2. Street Fighter has of course been a lead player in the legendary Marvel vs. Capcom series, and the not-so-legendary Street Fighter x Tekken.
