There are some amazing blockbuster movies on their way this summer, from DC’s The Flash featuring Michael Keaton to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. Both saw brand new trailers drop during last weekend’s 57th Super Bowl, offering up a tantalising glimpse of what’s in store. But it’s the Guardian trailer which really pulls on the heart string – in between all the action – offering a hint at Rocket’s origin as well as other details.

Rocket has one of the most harrowing backstories that previous Guardians of the Galaxy films have barely touched upon. In volume 3, however, that’s not the case. The trailer shows Rocket as a normal, cute Raccoon before being subject to torturous experiments that turn him into the super-intelligent, anthropomorphic space mercenary we all know and love. It also suggests that the movie’s main bad guy, the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), was behind these experiments.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 - Rocket

Trying to reach perfection

The villain mentions that he wants to “create the perfect society” just like half the evil characters out there. On the other hand, Rocket has a different viewpoint on this madness: “He didn’t want to make things perfect. He just hated things the way they are.”

We also get to see the return of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), albeit time-displaced, so that she has no feelings or interest in Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill. So what does Quill do, he starts flirting with Gamora’s sister Nebula (Karen Gillan) which goes as well as you’d expect.

Elsewhere in the trailer, Groot (Vin Diesel) has grown up and become far more stocky and dangerous, more like his previous incarnation. Once again, Groot and Rocket become the buddy duo audience can’t get enough of. Plus, we get to see Drax (Dave Bautista) fighting Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), a golden-haired cosmic character. All of this to Rainbow’s Since You’ve Been Gone.

All of this is set to wrap Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 up rather nicely. Bautista has already confirmed he’s glad things are wrapping up. Plus it might be James Gunn’s last time in the director’s seat for a while as he is now in control of the DC Universe.
