Despite the recent release of Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat 1 continues to grab headlines. The constant drip-feed of new information has seen details on the beta, a stress test and more revealed. However, now we’re getting to the real meat, as an update to the Mortal Kombat 1 roster has revealed a selection of new characters.

A batch of Mortal Kombat 1 characters were revealed alongside the initial announcement of the game. However, following the reveal of the first gameplay trailer at Summer Games Fest, developer NetheRealm Studios has confirmed another selection of additions to the Mortal Kombat 1 roster. It’s important to note the new ‘Kameo’ feature in the game may see some characters not ‘playable’ in the traditional sense, so first we’ll explain what this is all about.

Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo Feature

Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo is a new gameplay addition which will allow a player to pick a team mate to call into the fight. Similarly to the Marvel vs. Capcom series, however here it’s limited to a supporting role. The player will not be able to swap characters mid-match, simply have them assist.

This opens up a wealth of new opportunities. Extend your combos, break your opponents or launch a tag-team offensive. It’s already been confirmed that the control system for this will be simple one-button input, so players will likely adapt very quickly!

It should be noted that some characters may be both playable and Kameos. Sub Zero and Kung Lao are prime examples of this. However, the above is all the information we have at present.

Jean-Claude Van Damme in Mortal Kombat 1

In addition to the above, it turns out the rumours were true. Hollywood actor Jean-Claude Van Damme will appear in Mortal Kombat 1.

The actor will lend his likeness to classic character Johnny Cage, as well as voicing the character. We have not yet seen this in action, however.

Series co-creator Ed Boon was clearly thrilled to discuss this, stating: “It’s a huge full circle moment. The first Mortal Kombat game we originally wanted to be ‘Van Damme: The Video Game’. That never really worked out. So, I can’t tell you how many times over the last 30 years we tried to get him.

“Finally we got him, and he’s doing the voices, too! So you’re going to hear Jean-Claude doing Johnny Cage lines.”

Mortal Kombat 1 is set for release on 19th September, 2023. An upcoming beta will surely reveal more details very soon.
