Earlier in 2023 movie fans were treated to the news that Beetlejuice 2 would, in fact, be made. Seeing the return of director Tim Burton and Michael Keaton as the titular Betelgeuse, Keaton has begun talking about the production. An important part is keeping Beetlejuice 2 close to the original, ensuring the “handmade” quality remains.
Talking to Empire about the upcoming sequel, Keaton remarked: “Beetlejuice is the most f–kin’ fun you can have working. It’s so fun, it’s so great. And you know what it is? We’re doing it exactly like we did the first movie,” he said. “There’s a woman in the great waiting room for the afterlife literally with a fishing line – I want people to know this because I love it – tugging on the tail of a cat to make it move.”

Beetlejuice 2 close to the original
It’s well known that Burton and Keaton had planned on reviving Beetlejuice for years. But due to various issues including work commitments, they could never get the project off the ground…until now.
“[Burton] and I were talking about it years and years ago, never telling anybody. I said, ‘if it happens, first of all, we’ve both said we’re doing it many times. We both agreed, if it happens, it has to be done as close to the way we made it the first time,” Keaton explained.
Beetlejuice became a cult classic, thanks to its dark comedy, sheer lunacy and those Burton aesthetics. “Making stuff up, making stuff happen, improvising and riffing, but literally handmade stuff like people creating things with their hands and building something,” he adds. “F–kin’ great. It’s the most fun I’ve had working on a movie in I can’t tell you how long.”
In addition to Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara will also return. They’ll be joined by Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega as the daughter of Ryder’s character Lydia.
At the time of the first announcement, Beetlejuice 2 was slated for 2024. It’s still on for 6th September 2024. Are you looking forward to the sequel? Let us know in the comments below.
