If you’ve been uninspired by the latest comic book movies then perhaps an epic historical tale is in order. The latest comes from acclaimed director Ridley Scott, Napoleon tells the rise and fall of the infamous French Emporer Napoleon Bonaparte played by Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix. And as you can see from the first Napoleon trailer the battles are going to be breathtaking.

Having previously worked on another grand historical movie, Gladiator, Scott and Phoenix are collaborating once again. Several years in the making, Scott previously told Deadline in 2021: “Napoleon is a man I’ve always been fascinated by. He came out of nowhere to rule everything — but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Josephine. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn’t, he conquered it to destroy her, and destroyed himself in the process.”

“No actor could ever embody Napoleon like Joaquin. He created one of movie history’s most complex Emperors in Gladiator, and we’ll create another with his Napoleon,” Scott added.

Napoleon Trailer is a military spectacle

The film follows: “Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine, showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed,” a synopsis explains.

And that certainly seems the case from the trailer. It is littered with impressive battle scenes with sweeping shots of the carnage being wrought. It should make for quite the spectacle later this year.

Phoenix will be joined by Vanessa Kirby (playing Josephine), Ben Miles, Matthew Needham, Tahar Rahim, Youssef Kerkour and Phil Cornwell.

You can see the Napoleon trailer for yourself below. Sony Pictures will release the film in theatres on 22nd November 2023 with Apple TV+ streaming the film later on. Apple has been financing a selection of big movies for both theatres and its streaming service, the other being Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
