Netflix might not be the first place you think of for gaming but that’s not stopping the entertainment giant. And a new report suggests that Netflix plans on expanding its gaming library. Turning more of its biggest shows into games.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the streaming giant is looking at developing games based on several shows. These include Squid Game, Wednesday and Black Mirror. These will essentially be mobile games subscribers can access through the app, keeping them within Netflix’s ecosystem.

Currently, the Netflix gaming library contains over 70 titles, with more coming by the end of 2023. There’s no additional fee for subscribers, with an array of different genres available. Some IPs are already on there such as Vikings: Valhalla, Narcos: Cartel Wars Unlimited and Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales.

Netflix gaming

Currently, Netflix games can only be played on mobile through the app. Testing is already underway to bring these games to smart TV’s and desktop browsers. The company recently released a controller app to facilitate this process. Compatible with iOS devices, the app turns a subscriber’s phone into a controller to pair with a TV.

Netflix could very well tie in games with the launch of new seasons, as Squid Game Season 2 has been confirmed. However, with no release date as yet, the next instalment could be a long way off. The other approach could be to release a mobile game to maintain interest as Squid Game was released in 2021.

The game show was quite a TV phenomenon and has managed to maintain interest over the last couple of years. The IP has managed to branch out, even being made into a location-based virtual reality game exclusive to Sandbox VR locations worldwide.
