In 2021 a phenomenon arrived on the streaming platform Netflix. It was the show we all came to know, love and binge, Squid Game. Set in modern-day South Korea, it’s a dystopian game show for the rich and powerful. The winner can leave rich, but all the rest of the unfortunate contestants leave in body bags. It became (and still is) the most-watched Netflix show of all time. So, of course, a Squid Game Season 2 is on the cards.

Is Squid game season 2 coming?

The news regarding season 2 has been known about for over a year, with Netflix confirming its return In June 2022. This was then followed by writer, director, producer, and creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, writing a personal message to fans. Since then, there have been a few updates regarding the follow-up.

What date will Squid Game Season 2 come out?

Now that’s the big question, and currently, there’s no exact answer. Back in 2021, Dong-hyuk told Vanity Fair he thought a second season could premiere on Netflix “by the end of 2023 or 2024.” Then earlier this year Lee Jung-jae (who plays the lead character Seong Gi-hun) confirmed filming for season two would begin this summer.

“‘Squid Game 2’ will begin filming in the summer and the filming will likely last for about 10 months,” Jung-jae told allkpop. “We were working on Season 1 for about 10 months as well, but that was with delays caused by COVID-19.”

However, he also went on to say: “But seeing as Season 2 will be bigger in scale, it will probably take longer to complete.” So it’s highly likely that the second season won’t arrive until late 2024 or possibly even early 2025.

There’s also the current SAG-AFTRA strike to consider. The main production shouldn’t be affected as it’s entirely South Korea-based. But, Netflix shows need worldwide dubbing and language subtitles, which is where things could get held up.

Squid Game Cast Members

Season two will see four original cast members return. Alongside Jung-jae there’s Lee Byung-Hun (The Front Man/Hwang In-ho), Wi Ha-jun (Hwang Jun-ho), and Gong Yoo (The Salesman).

They’ll be joined by several newcomers including Yim Si-Wan, Kang Na-Heul, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun.

Squid Game Season 2 Story

While season one did partially wrap certain aspects of the story up, it was still open-ended enough to continue. Because who likes a one-season show left on a cliffhanger, hey Netflix! “It’s true that season one ended in an open-ended way, but I actually thought that this could be good closure for the whole story, too,” Dong-Hyuk previously commented.

Currently, nothing has been officially confirmed regarding season 2’s story. Dong-Hyuk has teased several possibilities he’d like to explore, such as the Front Man’s storyline. “But there are some other stories in the series that have not been addressed. For example, the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, the Front Man,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “So if I end up creating season two, I’d like to explore that storyline — what is going on between those two brothers?”

“And, of course, we could go with Gi-hun’s story as he turns back, and explore more about how he’s going to navigate through his reckoning with the people who are designing the games,” Dong-Hyuk adds.
