This week’s CinemaCon 2023 has been dropping some tasty film nuggets such as the new trailer for The Flash. Eagle-eyed attendees also noticed confirmation of a much-anticipated sequel, Beetlejuice 2.

Shown only very briefly during a Warner Bros. sizzle reel, the appearance of Beetlejuice 2 puts to bed rumours that have been circulating for years. The 1988 original is one of director Tim Burton’s most beloved classics, and he’ll be returning to helm the sequel.

Beetlejuice 2 is Official

The sizzle reel only confirmed the existence of Beetlejuice 2 so there are no official details regarding its narrative.

However, reports indicate that all the main cast will be returning. This includes Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. New to the cast will reportedly be Wednesday’s Jenny Ortega, who’s currently in discussions to be the daughter of Ryder’s Lydia from the original. Keaton had teased his involvement ten years ago, with plenty of rumours regarding script rewrites.

The suggestion is that production will begin in late May or June 2023.

Burton directed the first four episodes of Wednesday – the successful show he also helped create – so it’s hardly surprising he’d want to work with Ortega again. With a filmography that includes Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Sleepy Hollow and Mars Attacks, Burton’s most recent film projects haven’t been anywhere near as successful. Hopefully, returning to a fan favourite will see him return to form.

Micheal Keaton is also making a resurgence of late, returning to old roles. Besides Beetlejuice 2, he’s also back in the Batman suit for this summer’s The Flash. Arriving in theatres this June, it’ll mark the start of the new DC Universe from DC Studios.
