Horror film franchise The Conjuring began in 2013, spawning five films so far, the latest being 2018’s The Nun. A prequel to The Conjuring 2, the demonic nun Valak is set to make a return later this year. And you can see that for yourself in the new The Nun II trailer.
Directed by Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), The Nun II sees the return of Taissa Farmiga (The Nun, The Gilded Age) to the central role of Sister Irene.
As the brief synopsis explains: “1956 – France. A priest is murdered. An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun.”
The Nun ain’t gone
The entire Conjuring franchise has been a successful one, having combined earnings of over $2.1 billion USD worldwide. The Nun tops the roaster as the top-earning film in the franchise, achieving more than $366 million worldwide.
Joining Farmiga for this sequel will be Bonnie Aarons who reprises her role as the demonic Valak. They’ll be joined by Jonas Bloquet (Tirailleurs, The Nun), Storm Reid (The Last of Us, The Suicide Squad), and Anna Popplewell (Fairytale, The Chronicles of Narnia trilogy).
As you may remember, The Nun ended with Sister Irene and Maurice (Bloquet) escaping. However, Valak now possessed Maurice.
Discussing the sequel with Entertainment Weekly, Chaves said: “Maurice made his way to France and he’s working at this boarding school as kind of a handyman. He has a friendship and a flirtation with one of the teachers there, and you can see him starting to mature, so that’s where our characters start out. But we know from the first film that there’s something terrible inside of him, that Valak escaped within him, and events pull Irene back on this collision course with her old friend.”
The Nun II is scheduled to be released in theatres on 6th September 2023.
This isn’t the only horror film to look forward to. Filming recently completed on a new Alien movie, set to arrive in 2024.
