It has been quite a year for the movie industry. Strikes, production delays, postponements and let’s not forget about the juggernaut that is Barbie. Thrown into that mix is the announcement that Lionsgate has picked up domestic rights to The Crow reboot. Which is now slated for a 2024 release.
As Deadline reports, “Lionsgate has just tied up an eight-figure deal for domestic rights to The Crow reboot.” The production stars Bill Skarsgård (It) in the lead role of Eric Draven, with FKA twigs and Danny Huston co-starring. The reboot is helmed by director Rupert Sanders.
The Crow returns once again
“We appreciate what The Crow character and original movie mean to legions of fans and believe this new film will offer audiences an authentic and visceral reinterpretation of its emotional power and mythology,” said Lionsgate’s Executive VP of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Charlotte Koh. “To work with a creative team led by Rupert’s unparalleled visual style and storytelling and with a producing team who have made some of the most popular and impactful films of the last several decades is a true privilege.”
The original The Crow (1994), was based on a graphic novel published by Caliber Comics in 1989. Directed by Alex Proyas, the movie became a cult classic. However, it was mired in tragedy after lead star Brandon Lee was accidentally shot on set.
In the revenge thriller, Draven and his fiancée are murdered by local thugs. Draven is then brought back to life by a mysterious crow to enact his revenge on those responsible.
“The original film left an indelible mark on our culture that lives on,” added the producers. “We are thrilled to bring a new adaptation for today’s audiences that respects this legacy. Rupert has masterfully brought new dimensions to create a contemporary universe for this timeless saga of undying love, and we can’t wait to share this vision with film audiences.”
